Ladakh LG Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurates India’s highest football ground and synthetic track in Leh

LEH, May 14, 2026 — Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated India’s highest Astro Turf Football Ground, situated at an altitude of 11,500 feet, at the Open Stadium in Leh. The ceremony also marked the opening of a newly-constructed VIP stand and an 8-lane synthetic athletic track.

Developed with an investment of over 30 crore under the Khelo India scheme and a Special Development Package, this modern sports infrastructure is designed to provide world-class training opportunities for the youth of the high-altitude region.

The Lieutenant Governor stated that these international-level facilities will help nurture discipline and confidence among local athletes, preparing them for national and international competitions.

Beyond talent development, the project is expected to boost sports tourism and stimulate economic growth in Ladakh.

Saxena emphasized that this development represents a new era for the region, ensuring that young people no longer have to travel outside the Union Territory to access professional-grade amenities.

Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued support of the development of Ladakh, Saxena reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to empowering local youth. He noted that the establishment of a vibrant sporting culture will strengthen regional unity and bring prestige to the nation.
