India first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh gains rapid progress
LEH, June 29 — Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena announced that work on India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh is progressing rapidly, with 31 ancient rock arts already relocated and preserved at the site.
These petroglyphs, measuring 4 feet to 17 feet in circumference and weighing between 500 kilograms to 10 metric tonnes, have been carefully relocated from Saboo Thang. A total of 155 petroglyphs will be preserved at the conservation park during the first phase of the project.
These petroglyphs serve as invaluable records of the regional civilisational journey and cultural identity, making the establishment of the Petroglyph Conservation Park a historic step towards safeguarding the priceless archaeological heritage of Ladakh.
Through this dedicated initiative, the administration aims to ensure their long-term protection, promote heritage education and research, and create a world-class destination for responsible cultural tourism and future generations.
