Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026: Rajnath Singh Flags Off 1,900-km Bike Rally to Honor Fallen Heroes

NEW DELHI, July 14, 2026: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off a 13-day commemorative motorcycle expedition, the ‘Shaurya Vijay Yatra’, from the National War Memorial in New Delhi to the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. Organized as part of the nationwide Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations, the expedition features 28 riders, including active-duty personnel, military veterans, and their families. Over the next two weeks, the group will traverse a challenging 1,900-kilometer route through the northern Himalayas under the official motto “One Ride, One Nation, One Salute” to honor the sacrifice of the soldiers who secured victory during the 1999 Kargil War.

Addressing the gathering, Singh paid tribute to the soldiers who fought at altitudes of nearly 20,000 feet and in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius. He emphasized that the 1999 victory stands as a testament to India’s enduring resolve to protect its land, identity, and honor with full military might. The Defense Minister expressed deep gratitude to the country’s bravehearts, specifically naming Param Vir Chakra awardees Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav, and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, noting that their valour remains an ongoing inspiration for the youth.

Along the journey, the riders will pay homage at several landmark military sites, including the Chandimandir, Rezang La, and Leh War Memorials, while also interacting with and honoring Veer Naris (war widows). A central symbol of the journey is an urn containing sacred soil from the National War Memorial, which will be mixed with the soil at Kargil upon their arrival. Singh noted that this symbolic confluence merges the reverence of the current generation with the historic valor of the nation’s heroes, uniting individuals of diverse backgrounds under a shared respect for the Armed Forces.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by National Cadet Corps cadets alongside top military leadership, including Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani and Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth. Singh expressed confidence that the yatra would inspire a renewed sense of patriotism across the country, showing future generations that the defense of national freedom thrives both at the borders and within collective memory. The expedition is scheduled to culminate at the Kargil War Memorial on Kargil Vijay Diwas, July 26, 2026, reinforcing the Indian Army’s commitment to the values of duty and selfless service demonstrated during Operation Vijay.
