India Summons Iranian Diplomat After Deadly Attacks on Commercial Ships in Strait of Hormuz

NEW DELHI, July 14, 2026 — India has expressed deep concern and lodged a strong protest following targeted attacks on two commercial vessels, the MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the strategic Strait of Hormuz today. The two ships were operating with a combined crew of 46 personnel, which included 30 Indian seafarers. Tragically, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that out of the 12 Indian nationals onboard the MT Al Bahiyah, one individual lost his life and another suffered injuries. Meanwhile, aboard the MT Mombasa, 9 out of the 18 Indian crew members sustained injuries, with two individuals reported to be in serious condition.

In response to the escalating crisis, New Delhi immediately summoned the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Iran to register a formal, robust protest against the maritime strikes. Concurrently, India’s diplomatic Mission and Post in the UAE are closely coordinating with local Emirati authorities to ensure comprehensive assistance reaches the affected crew members. India has strongly condemned these acts of violence against civilian seafarers, warning that the targeting of commercial shipping severely disrupts free and safe international navigation. Demanding an immediate cessation of regional hostilities and a return to diplomatic dialogue, Indian officials emphasized that unimpeded commerce must be restored in accordance with international law to preserve peace and stability across West Asia.
