Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Visits Flood-Hit Poonch, Guarantees Comprehensive Rehabilitation and 5-Marla Land Plots for Homeless Families

POONCH, AUGUST 05 — Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conducted an extensive tour of the flood-devastated regions in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district to personally gauge the structural destruction caused by recent cloudbursts and flash floods. During his visit, the Chief Minister met with affected residents, offered profound condolences to grieving households, and systematically evaluated the ongoing rescue, relief, and restoration efforts spearheaded by local administrative agencies.

While touring the severely impacted villages of Murrah, Surankote, and Arigam-Loran, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah engaged directly with families suffering from severe losses. In Murrah, he visited the residence of Mohammad Latif, who lost eight family members to the torrents, offering deep sympathies and prayers for the departed. Similarly, at Arigam-Loran, the Chief Minister offered condolences and participated in Fatiha Khwani with the grieving relatives of Mohd Rafiq and Riaz Ahmed, whose household lost seven members during the sudden deluge.

During his stop at Surankote, local delegations representing Sangla, Darra Sangla, and Lower Sangla briefed the Chief Minister on the widespread destruction of residential properties, agricultural fields, and public infrastructure. In response to the grievances voiced by displaced residents, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that families rendered completely landless by the natural calamity will receive 5-marla land plots to rebuild their homes. Addressing the unpredictable nature of cloudbursts, he acknowledged current technological limitations in predicting such localized weather anomalies and emphasized that the administration will explore state-of-the-art early-warning systems to bolster future disaster preparedness and mitigate loss of life.

Concluding his visit, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah presided over a high-level review meeting with senior officials to streamline ongoing rehabilitation operations. He ordered administrative departments to accelerate comprehensive damage assessments, distribute immediate financial and material relief, and prioritize the rapid restoration of essential utilities across the district. Praising the swift, synchronized response of public workers and emergency agencies, the Chief Minister explicitly commended Deputy Commissioner Poonch and Senior Superintendent of Police Poonch for their exemplary leadership on the ground. Throughout the inspection tour, the Chief Minister was accompanied by Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana, Poonch-Haveli MLA Aijaz Ahmed Jan, Surankote MLA Choudhary Mohammad Akram, Additional Chief Secretary Dheeraj Gupta, alongside several key district officers.
