Kathua Police Arrest Drug Peddler, Seize 5 Grams of Heroin in Changran Operation
KATHUA, AUGUST 05: Continuing its aggressive crackdown on the illegal narcotics trade and its network of distributors, the Jammu and Kashmir Police in Kathua successfully apprehended a suspected drug peddler and recovered approximately 5 grams of a substance resembling heroin, locally known as chitta, near the Changran area under the jurisdiction of Kathua Police Station.
The operation unfolded on August 4, 2026, when a police patrolling team—led by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kathua Police Station, under the direct supervision of the Additional Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters)—acted on reliable intelligence regarding suspicious movements in the vicinity. During their routine patrol near Changran, officers intercepted a man who was displaying suspicious behavior. Upon detailed questioning, the suspect identified himself as Gopal Mehra, son of Gulshan Mehra, a resident of Ward No. 08 in the Kathua district.
A thorough search of the individual led to the immediate discovery and recovery of approximately 5 grams of the heroin-like narcotic from his possession. Police officers promptly seized the contraband and arrested the suspect on the spot. Following the recovery, Kathua Police registered a formal case under FIR No. 393/2026, invoking Sections 8, 21, and 22 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Police Station Kathua. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway to determine the origin of the seized narcotics and trace any potential links to larger drug distribution networks operating within the region.
