GCW Udhampur Hosts Patriotic Painting Competition to Celebrate Independence Week
UDHAMPUR, AUGUST 05, 2026 — In a vibrant display of artistic talent and civic pride, the Government College for Women (GCW), Udhampur organized a comprehensive Painting Competition on Wednesday under the aegis of its Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Arranged as a core event within the college’s week-long Independence Week celebrations running from August 3 to August 8, 2026, the initiative was designed to honor India’s freedom struggle while fostering patriotism, artistic creativity, and national unity among the student community.
The competition brought together approximately 15 enthusiastic students representing the 1st, 3rd, and 5th semesters. Participants were given a platform to express their vision and deep emotional connection to the nation through art, focusing on diverse themes such as the Indian freedom movement, national harmony, cultural heritage, and the broader vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat). Demonstrating exceptional imagination and original artistic expression, the students produced compelling works that showcased their technical skills alongside a deep appreciation for the country’s history and future aspirations.
A distinguished panel of evaluators judged the entries based on strict criteria, including relevance to the theme, originality, creative execution, color composition, and overall visual impact. The evaluation panel comprised faculty members Prof. Yash Paul (HOD History and Convener for DSW and Viksit Bharat), Dr. Anita Sharma (Assistant Professor of Zoology), Dr. Sushma Choudhary (Assistant Professor of Dogri), and Prof. Yash Kumar (Assistant Professor of Music). Following a rigorous judging process, Kiran Bala secured the First Prize for outstanding artistic merit, while Manya Verma and Yogita Narwal earned the Second and Third Prizes, respectively. All winners were formally recognized and awarded medallions for their achievements.
Addressing the gathering, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Nalini Pathania emphasized the deeper philosophical meaning behind national celebrations, noting that independence is not merely a static historical milestone, but an ongoing feeling of pride, shared responsibility, and commitment to the nation. She urged the students to honor the profound sacrifices made by freedom fighters by actively reflecting on their own roles and obligations as citizens of a free India.
Adding to the sentiment, Convener Prof. Yash Paul commended the students for their spirited involvement and highlighted how creative platforms nurture talent while instilling core patriotic values. He encouraged the youth to draw direct inspiration from historical sacrifices and apply that energy toward positive nation-building efforts. The entire program was convened seamlessly under the direction of the Directorate of Student Welfare (DSW) and Viksit Bharat Committee, supported by faculty members, the organizing committee, and the participating student body.
