Srinagar sewage treatment plants get major upgrade as Chief Minister lays foundation stones
SRINAGAR, June 16, 2026:- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stones for two major sewerage infrastructure projects in Srinagar designed to strengthen wastewater treatment facilities and upgrade urban sanitation.
The dual development projects carry a combined value of over ₹26.5 crore. The infrastructure upgrades are being executed under the Capex Programme by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department, Kashmir, operating under the Housing and Urban Development Department. The first project involves the augmentation and upgradation of the existing 17.08 MLD capacity Sewage Treatment Plant at Brarinambal at a cost of ₹12 crore, which will improve operational efficiency and address the rising wastewater demands of the city.
The second initiative features the construction of a new 2.5 MLD capacity Sewage Treatment Plant alongside the laying of a 3.95-kilometer sewer network at Chattabal, costing an estimated ₹14.54 crore. This new setup aims to provide better sanitation facilities to local households and prevent the direct discharge of untreated wastewater into natural water channels.
The Chief Minister noted that upgrading urban infrastructure remains a central priority for the government to secure sustainable development and elevate the quality of life for residents. He highlighted that these facilities will substantially boost total sewage treatment capacity, improve localized environmental conditions, and support the broader conservation of water bodies across Srinagar.
The foundation stone ceremonies were attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, alongside legislators Shamim Firdous, Ali Mohammad Sagar, Tanvir Sadiq, and Salman Ali Sagar.
Housing and Urban Development Department Commissioner Secretary Mandeep Kaur, senior departmental engineers, and local residents were also present to mark the launch of the environmental sanitation works.
