INS Sudarshini reaches Antigua completing historic trans Atlantic voyage for Lokayan 26

NEW DELHI, May 28, 2026 :-The Indian Navy’s Sail Training Ship, INS Sudarshini, arrived in Antigua on May 27, 2026, after successfully completing a historic trans-Atlantic passage as part of its ongoing Lokayan 26 expedition.

Upon arrival, the vessel was warmly received by Vijay Tewani, the Honorary Consul General of India to Antigua and Barbuda, alongside Brigadier Telbert Benjamin, the Chief of Defence Staff of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force.

This journey marks the very first Atlantic crossing for INS Sudarshini, a feat last achieved by its sister ship, INS Tarangini, nearly two decades ago in 2007.The sea route from Mindelo, Cape Verde to Antigua represented the longest leg of the current expedition, spanning 19 days of continuous sailing.

Throughout the journey, the crew relied entirely on wind propulsion, demonstrating exceptional traditional seamanship and endurance while navigating challenging open-ocean conditions characterized by heavy swells and powerful winds. The successful crossing required sustained watchkeeping, precise sail handling, and traditional navigation practices to keep the vessel safely on course.

During this demanding stretch, INS Sudarshini surpassed the significant milestone of 10,000 nautical miles traveled since its initial departure from Kochi on January 20, 2026. The Lokayan 26 expedition is designed to enhance international maritime outreach, foster global goodwill, and showcase India’s historic seafaring heritage, embodying the naval philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

Having already completed successful port calls across West Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Africa, the vessel has officially entered its Caribbean and American phase, which will include participating in the upcoming SAIL 250 events in the United States. While docked in Antigua, the crew will engage in professional interactions, cultural exchanges, and community outreach before setting sail for Norfolk, USA.
