Delhi Metro launches hydrogen shuttle bus at Central Vista
NEW DELHI, May 14, 2026 — The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is set to introduce a sustainable transport solution in the heart of the capital starting May 15. In partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the agency will launch a hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service.
This initiative is designed to offer seamless last-mile connectivity within the Central Vista area, linking the Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth Metro stations to various government offices to reduce the city’s reliance on private vehicles.
Two advanced hydrogen-fuelled buses provided by Indian Oil Corporation Limited will serve the route. Each vehicle has a seating capacity for 35 passengers and features GPS tracking and CCTV systems to ensure safety and punctuality. The service is scheduled to operate every 30 minutes on all working days, excluding gazetted holidays.
Commuters can access the shuttles during peak hours, with morning slots from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM and afternoon sessions from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM.The buses will follow a circular route in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions, making stops at several key landmarks. Notable locations include Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, and India Gate, as well as the National Stadium and the National Gallery of Modern Arts.
This comprehensive loop ensures that government officials and the public can easily navigate the Central Vista region using a clean energy alternative.
Commuters can pay for their travel using the National Common Mobility Card, UPI, or cash. The pricing is structured to be affordable, with stage-wise tickets costing either 10 or 15 rupees.
While the metro corporation handles ticketing and general operations, the oil corporation is responsible for providing the drivers and the hydrogen fuel. This project serves as a significant milestone for green mobility in India and acts as a model for future hydrogen-based transit systems across the nation.
