India Ensures Energy Security and Maritime Safety Amid West Asia Crisis; LPG and PNG Supplies Stabilized
NEW DELHI — May 14, 2026: In a comprehensive inter-ministerial briefing held today at the National Media Centre, the Government of India reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an uninterrupted energy supply and ensuring the safety of maritime trade amidst evolving geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Officials from the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Information & Broadcasting detailed a robust framework of logistical successes and safety protocols that have kept the nation’s fuel infrastructure resilient.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported significant milestones in domestic fuel distribution, noting that approximately 1.39 crore LPG cylinders were delivered against 1.40 crore bookings over the last three days. To prevent panic buying and ensure reaching vulnerable populations, PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have conducted over 11,870 awareness camps since April 3, 2026, resulting in the sale of more than 2.10 lakh 5kg FTL cylinders. Simultaneously, the government is accelerating the transition to piped natural gas (PNG), with 7.03 lakh new connections gasified since March 2026 and infrastructure prepared for nearly 3 lakh more. To shield consumers from volatile global crude prices, the government has also implemented a ₹10 per litre reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel.
On the maritime front, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed that critical energy imports remain on schedule despite regional instability. Two major vessels, SYMI and NV SUNSHINE, carrying a combined total of over 66,000 MT of LPG cargo, successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz and are expected to dock at Kandla and New Mangalore ports within the week. Regarding seafarer safety, officials confirmed that all 14 crew members of the Indian Dhow Haji Ali were safely rescued by the Omani Coast Guard following a fire incident in Omani waters. No other incidents involving Indian vessels or seafarers have been reported in the last 72 hours, and the government continues to monitor the situation through the DG Shipping Control Room, which has facilitated the repatriation of over 3,100 Indian seafarers to date.
