CHANDIGARH, April 29, 2026:- Bhagwant Mann Chief Minister of Punjab announced a series of major initiatives today aimed at securing the future of Punjab through significant investments in irrigation and agriculture.

During a press conference in Chandigarh, the chief minister detailed a historic investment of 6700 crore dedicated to the state irrigation infrastructure. This project includes the construction of 14,000 kilometers of new pipelines and 4000 kilometers of new canals completed this season alone.

The primary objective of these efforts is to reduce reliance on groundwater by ensuring canal water reaches every single farm across the state.Starting May 1, canals will be released at full capacity to support the upcoming agricultural season.

The government has focused on ensuring that even tail-end areas like Fazilka and Abohar receive adequate water supplies by May 2. These water management strategies have already shown positive results, with groundwater levels reported to have risen between 2 and 4 meters due to active recharging efforts.

To further optimize resources, the government has divided paddy sowing into four distinct zones. Direct seeding is scheduled to begin on May 15, followed by a phased supply of canal water starting June 1 to conserve electricity and assist laborers. In addition to agricultural updates, the chief minister addressed the welfare of Punjabis returning from abroad, stating that the government will provide all possible assistance to those deported from Australia.

He emphasized that the administration remains fully committed to generating employment for the youth and protecting every drop of the state water for future generations.

By modernizing the irrigation network and regulating crop cycles, the government aims to create a sustainable and prosperous environment for the farming community.
