JMC Commissioner Orders Reopening of Bikram Chowk Subway Under Strict New Safety Guidelines
JAMMU, APRIL 15, 2026:- In a decisive move to reclaim public infrastructure from neglect and misuse, Dr. Devansh Yadav, Commissioner of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), conducted a high-level inspection of the Bikram Chowk subway today.
Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Badyal and senior police officials, the Commissioner issued immediate on-spot directives to restore the facility for public use while addressing long-standing concerns regarding hygiene and safety.
To prevent the subway from becoming a hub for illicit activities, the JMC has established a new regulated schedule, mandating that the passage will now remain open strictly between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM daily.
The revitalization plan introduces a multi-layered security approach, combining technology with active human oversight. Dr. Yadav has instructed the police department to implement regular patrols and maintain a constant presence during operational hours to protect commuters.
Furthermore, the subway has been upgraded with improved lighting and a comprehensive CCTV surveillance network to monitor movement and deter anti-social behavior.
Sanitation teams have also been tasked with a rigorous cleaning schedule to ensure the environment remains hygienic, moving away from the poor conditions that previously led to its repeated closure.
Underlining the need for long-term accountability, the Commissioner emphasized that the subway will now operate under the joint supervision of both the JMC and local police. This collaborative management strategy is designed to ensure that the facility remains a safe, well-maintained thoroughfare for the citizens of Jammu.
By restricting late-night access and prioritizing cleanliness, the administration aims to transform the Bikram Chowk subway from a problematic site into a reliable piece of urban infrastructure that serves the community effectively.
