J&K Assembly Demands Strict Punishment Following Assassination Attempt on Dr. Farooq Abdullah
JAMMU, MARCH 28, 2026: In a session marked by rare political unanimity, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly today erupted in condemnation following a recent assassination attempt on former Chief Minister and veteran leader Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, leading the discussion, described Dr. Abdullah as an internationally respected statesman who steered the region through its most turbulent chapters, dedicating his life to communal harmony and development.
The Speaker formally called for a “free, fair, and in-depth probe” into the incident, emphasizing that the culprits must face the strictest possible legal action to ensure such a “cowardly act” is never repeated.
The House was informed that both Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha have personally reached out to Dr. Abdullah to inquire about his well-being, assuring the administration’s full support for a comprehensive investigation.
The gravity of the event was underscored by the participation of nearly thirty legislators from across the political spectrum—including Ministers Sakeena Itoo and Satish Sharma, along with prominent members like Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Sajad Gani Lone, and Waheed ur Rehman Para. Together, the members lauded Dr. Abdullah’s resilience and reiterated that any threat to such a towering political figure is an affront to the democratic fabric of Jammu and Kashmir.
