Shopian Food Safety Crackdown: Multiple Establishments Inspected and Violators Penalized to Ensure Public Health

SHOPIAN, March 5, 2026 — In a decisive move to safeguard public health and enforce strict adherence to the Food Safety and Standards Act (2006), a specialized inspection team carried out an extensive food safety drive across several key areas of the Shopian district today.

Led by Food Safety Officer Firdous Ahmed Pandit, the team conducted rigorous checks at bakeries, meat shops, and grocery stores in Nadigam, Kutpora, and Kundalan.

The drive focused on evaluating hygiene protocols, sanitation practices, and the overall quality of food items available for public consumption.During the operation, the team identified several high-risk violations, leading to the immediate seizure and on-the-spot destruction of expired food products to prevent potential health hazards.

Beyond the seizures, two Food Business Operators (FBOs) were caught in direct violation of safety regulations and have been recommended for formal legal action under Section 69 of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

The inspection team also used the opportunity to sensitize local vendors on the importance of maintaining proper storage conditions and adhering to prescribed safety benchmarks to maintain consumer trust.

The safety sweep extended to the ICDS Centre at Nadigam, where officials verified the handling and hygiene of food provided to beneficiaries. After inspecting the kitchen facilities and ration storage, the team issued strict instructions to the staff regarding the maintenance of cleanliness and rigorous sanitation.

This comprehensive drive underscores the district administration’s commitment to “zero tolerance” toward food adulteration and poor hygiene, ensuring that both commercial outlets and public welfare centers meet the highest safety standards.
