RAMBAN, January 28, 2026 — In a notable application of reformative justice, the District Police Ramban has successfully secured a community service sentence for an individual involved in preventive proceedings under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The accused, identified as Sebastian Kumar, a resident of Bihar currently staying at Bowli Bazar, Ramban, was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Ramban on January 27, 2026, following proceedings initiated under Section 355 of the BNS.
Opting for a corrective rather than a strictly punitive approach, the Hon’ble Court directed Kumar to perform mandatory community service at District Hospital Ramban. The sentence requires the accused to engage in cleaning, sweeping, and mopping at the healthcare facility for two hours daily on January 28 and 29, 2026.
The execution of this court-ordered service is being closely monitored by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of District Hospital Ramban, who is responsible for supervising the labor and ensuring all necessary arrangements are in place.
This move highlights a shift toward reformative measures within the local judicial system, aiming to instill civic responsibility while maintaining public order. District Police Ramban reaffirmed their dedication to using these lawful, preventive strategies to foster a safer community environment.
By integrating community service into sentencing, the court seeks to balance the enforcement of law with rehabilitation, providing a visible contribution to public welfare by those found in violation of preventive statutes.
