India’s First Geothermal Wells Commissioned in Ladakh: A Giant Leap for Green Energy

LEH, LADAKH — July 17, 2026 :- In a monumental stride toward sustainable development and clean energy, India has successfully commissioned its first and deepest geothermal wells in the high-altitude terrain of Puga Valley, Ladakh. Announced today by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on the social media platform X, the historic achievement features two 1,000-meter-deep wells drilled at an breathtaking altitude of over 14,000 feet. Executed by the ONGC Energy Centre, this pioneering engineering feat paves the way for the establishment of India’s first 1 MW pilot geothermal power project in the region.

Despite facing extreme weather, unpredictable geothermal activities, and highly complex subsurface conditions, dedicated engineering teams completed the drilling in record time. LG Saxena lauded the breakthrough as a vital milestone that not only strengthens India’s energy security but also aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving a Carbon-Neutral Ladakh and a Net-Zero India. Saxena expressed immense confidence that the geothermal project will catalyze Ladakh’s holistic development by promoting environmental sustainability, ensuring a reliable local power source, and driving socio-economic growth. He concluded his announcement by extending heartfelt congratulations to every engineer, technical expert, and worker whose resilience and expertise made this historic project a reality.
