Active monsoon and western disturbances to trigger heavy rain and flash flood risks in Jammu and Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 1, 2026 :- Monsoon conditions have become active across Jammu and Kashmir, coinciding with a succession of three weak western disturbances set to influence the Union Territory this week. The first system is currently affecting the region and is expected to weaken by tomorrow, while a second disturbance will arrive tomorrow night and last until Saturday morning.

A third system is projected to impact the area from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Although these western disturbances are individually weak, their interaction with active monsoon winds is expected to significantly alter the weather, creating a combined effect that increases the likelihood of moderate to heavy showers and elevates the risk of short-duration intense rainfall, including isolated cloudbursts.

Rain and thundershower activity will spread across various parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days, with the highest frequency and intensity expected to peak by Friday before gradually declining. The Jammu region is anticipated to bear the maximum impact, with some areas experiencing heavy showers. While the rainfall will occur in intermittent spells rather than a continuous downpour, the brief, intense bursts could be strong enough to trigger localized flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides in vulnerable sectors.

In the Kashmir region, rainfall will primarily be driven by the passing western disturbances, bringing increased cloud cover and intermittent showers that are expected to lower temperatures and provide relief from the ongoing heatwave.

While widespread heavy rain or prolonged flooding is not anticipated due to the relatively weak nature of both systems, water levels in rivers, streams, and nallahs will likely rise temporarily.

Residents and travelers are advised to exercise caution and avoid visiting rivers, streams, and other vulnerable areas, as the risk of isolated cloudbursts, mudslides, and localized flash floods remains elevated over the next few days.
