Ladakh bans chemical fertilizers to become fully organic region

LEH, July 18, 2026: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, announced a historic step towards transforming the union territory into a completely organic region by imposing a strict ban on the use and sale of chemical and synthetic fertilizers for agricultural practices.

The decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting organic and traditional farming, focusing heavily on environmental conservation, improving soil health, and driving sustainable development across the region.

The administration aims to safeguard the unique agro-ecological character of Ladakh by preserving the natural fertility of its soil. By accelerating the shift toward organic farming, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance the market value of the region’s agricultural produce while creating better sustainable livelihood opportunities for local farmers.

Ladakh has already made substantial progress toward this environmental milestone, with 207 revenue villages already secured under official organic certification. The local government emphasized that this transition positions the union territory to become a leading model for organic cultivation in the country, paving the way for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
