Udhampur administration issues heavy rainfall alert and suspends farming activities
UDHAMPUR, July 18, 2026: The District Disaster Management Authority in Udhampur has issued a comprehensive weather advisory warning residents to remain vigilant from July 19 to July 23, 2026.
Following a forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department in Srinagar, officials expect the most intense weather activity to occur between July 20 and July 23. The forecast indicates a strong possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, brief intense showers, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places across the district.
The severe weather conditions are highly likely to cause major transport disruptions due to landslides, shooting stones, and slippery roads. The administration noted that the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, the Ramnagar-Basantgarh-Latti road, and other crucial link roads face high risks.
Vulnerable hilly terrains particularly prone to landslides and mudslides include Ramnagar, Chenani, Latti-Dudu, Panchari, Moungri, and Basantgarh. Furthermore, waterlogging and flash floods are expected as water levels rise in local nallahs, streams, and the Tawi river catchment areas.
In response to these threats, the administration has directed all concerned departments, including the PWD, PMGSY, PHE, PDD, health, police, and SDRF, to remain on high alert with quick response mechanisms ready. Farmers and orchardists have been explicitly advised to suspend all farm operations, including harvesting, spraying, and irrigation, during this five-day period to avoid agricultural losses and protect livestock.
The general public is advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in hilly areas, and travelers must confirm road statuses before moving on major district routes. Authorities have warned citizens to stay away from vulnerable spots like landslide-prone locations, nallahs, and riverbanks.
In case of emergency, residents can contact the District Emergency Operation Centre at 01992-272727 or 01992-272728, or dial the Emergency Response Support System at 112. The official order was issued by Prem Singh, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Udhampur.
