Government pledges support to preserve Kashmirs heritage houseboats

SRINAGAR, June 16, 2026:- The government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is fully committed to protecting and preserving the treasured houseboat heritage of Kashmir. Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment, and Tribal Affairs Javed Ahmed Rana affirmed this position during a high-level meeting with the All Kashmir Houseboat Owners Association at the Civil Secretariat.

The meeting, which was also attended by Zadibal constituency legislator Tanveer Sadiq, focused on the critical role these iconic structures play in the region’s cultural identity and tourism economy.During the interaction, the houseboat delegation led by Chairman Manzoor Ahmad Pakhtoon highlighted several pressing challenges facing the sector.

The representatives emphasized that houseboats are a unique heritage asset providing a livelihood to hundreds of local families, and they requested an enhanced timber quota alongside a simplified procurement process to handle vital repairs, renovations, and routine maintenance.

The Minister assured the delegation that their concerns would be examined sympathetically, reiterating the administration’s intent to safeguard these cultural assets while supporting the dependent communities.

In a separate session on the same day, legislators Ranbir Singh Pathania and Mir Saifullah also met with the Minister to discuss public welfare and developmental needs in their respective constituencies. The Minister listened to the localized issues raised by the lawmakers and assured them that the government would review and address their constituency-specific grievances in a time-bound manner.
