Udhampur Police Dismantle Bovine Smuggling Networks: 545 Animals Rescued and Assets Worth ₹95 Lakh Attached

UDHAMPUR | April 02, 2026 — In a massive crackdown on organized crime and illegal animal trafficking, the District Police Udhampur has concluded a high-intensity three-month operation, successfully rescuing 545 bovines and arresting 78 individuals.

Spanning from January to March 2026, this sustained drive underscores the department’s firm commitment to eradicating bovine smuggling within the district.

During this period, authorities registered 71 separate cases related to the unlawful transportation of animals, leading to the seizure of 59 vehicles used in these criminal activities.

Among those detained, 77 suspects were arrested for direct involvement in smuggling, while one habitual offender was booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) to prevent further illicit operations.

Beyond the arrests, the Udhampur Police initiated a significant financial strike against the smuggling syndicates by attaching movable properties linked to these crimes under Section 107(5) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

The attached assets, which include high-value logistics equipment such as a Tata Mobile Tanker and a Thermo-freeze Canter, have a combined market valuation of ₹95 lakh. This strategic move aims to dismantle the financial infrastructure that sustains habitual offenders.

Reaffirming a zero-tolerance policy, the District Police Udhampur has urged the general public to remain vigilant and share credible information to assist law enforcement in completely eliminating illegal bovine trafficking from the region.
