Sopore Bypass Bridge Safe and Structurally Sound, Confirms Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary

JAMMU, MARCH 31: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary informed the Legislative Assembly today that the Sopore Bypass Bridge remains structurally intact and safe for all vehicular movement, dismissing any concerns regarding its stability.

Responding to a Calling Attention Notice moved by Legislator Irshad Rasool Kar during the Budget Session 2026, the Deputy Chief Minister explained that the bridge was originally engineered with a rigid Cement Concrete (CC) deck designed to withstand heavy structural loads over the long term.

To enhance riding comfort and minimize vibrations for commuters, a bituminous blacktop layer was later applied over this solid concrete base. The Deputy Chief Minister clarified that any visible distress or damage is strictly limited to the top bituminous overlay, manifesting as minor localized patches and surface peeling.

This wear and tear has been accelerated by the high volume of heavy traffic associated with the nearby Sopore Fruit Mandi. He reassured the House that these surface issues do not reflect any structural deficiency in the main concrete body, which remains fully stable.

Following prompt intervention, Project BEACON has mobilized resources to carry out priority repairs, including the removal of damaged bitumen and the application of more durable bonding materials.

The Deputy Chief Minister added that the repair work is being closely monitored and will be completed expeditiously to restore a smooth driving experience for the public.
