Kathua Forest Department Hosts Scientific Training on Lantana Camara Eradication at Balode Nursery
Kathua, Mar 27: To combat the growing threat of invasive plant species, the Forest Department, in collaboration with the Kathua and Samba Forest Divisions, organized a comprehensive training and demonstration programme on Lantana Camara eradication at Balode Nursery today. Under the guidance of East Circle Conservator of Forests Pradeep chandra Wahule and the supervision of Divisional Forest Officer Ankit Sinha, the session focused on the ecological dangers posed by Lantana, including the suppression of natural forest regeneration and the degradation of local wildlife habitats.
Officer Trainee Anusha Kolli also contributed to the session, which aimed to equip forest personnel with the scientific knowledge required to restore biodiversity in affected zones. The highlight of the programme was a practical field demonstration of the cut rootstock method, a specialized technique where the rootstock is severed below ground level to prevent the plant from re-sprouting.
Attendees were instructed to place removed plants upside down to ensure they dry out completely, effectively inhibiting re-growth. Beyond removal, the department emphasized the critical need for immediate post-eradication restoration by planting native grasses, bamboo, and other indigenous species in the cleared areas.
This hands-on training and interactive session reflect the Forest Department’s proactive commitment to utilizing evidence-based methods for invasive species management and strengthening the long-term health of the region’s forest ecosystem.
