Mehbooba Mufti Slams J&K CM Over “Delayed” Condemnation of Israeli Attacks on Iran
Srinagar, Mar 27: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti took to social media on Friday to deliver a scathing critique of the current Jammu and Kashmir administration’s response to the ongoing Middle East crisis.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mufti expressed her deep disappointment over what she termed a “disheartening” delay by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in addressing the conflict. She pointed out the irony that the leader of India’s only Muslim-majority state took an entire month to unequivocally condemn what she described as Israel’s “dastardly attack” on Iran, suggesting a lack of political will and urgency from the local government.
The former Chief Minister further highlighted a perceived lack of leadership by comparing Jammu and Kashmir’s response to that of other regions. Mufti noted that the Punjab Assembly acted with significantly more speed and resolve, becoming the first legislative body in the country to pass a formal resolution in solidarity with Iran.
She argued that while other states demonstrated genuine concern through legislative action, the J&K government opted for “mere rhetoric and speeches” rather than taking a firm, principled stand.
Her remarks underscore a growing political rift in the Assembly over how the Union Territory should navigate its diplomatic and emotional ties to the international crisis.
