Handwara Police Secure 20-Year Conviction for Accused in Sensitive 2021 POCSO Case
Handwara March 24, 2026 — In a major victory for child safety and the legal system, Handwara Police have successfully secured a conviction against an individual involved in a grave criminal case from 2021.
The Principal District and Sessions Court in Kupwara delivered the final verdict against Irshad Ahmad Mir, who was found guilty of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a minor girl.
This legal breakthrough follows years of dedicated investigation and a professional approach by the Kralgund Police Station, which originally registered the case under FIR No. 69/2021.The court sentenced Irshad Ahmad Mir to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹50,000 under Section 4(2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Furthermore, the convict was awarded an additional three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000 under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for kidnapping. Both sentences are ordered to run concurrently, ensuring the convict serves a substantial term for his crimes.This conviction stands as a testament to the relentless efforts of Handwara Police in pursuing justice for the most vulnerable members of society.
