Indian Railways Approves ₹647 Crore for Major Rail Projects in Gujarat and Bihar to Boost Connectivity
NEW DELHI, March 24, 2026 — The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned two transformative infrastructure projects totaling ₹647.58 crore to enhance operational efficiency and ease congestion across the Western and Eastern Railway networks.
The first major approval involves the construction of a 9.20 km Rail-over-Rail (RoR) flyover at Kosamba in Gujarat, estimated at ₹344.38 crore. This flyover is a critical component of the ongoing Kosamba–Umrapada Gauge Conversion project; by bypassing the Dedicated Freight Corridor alignment, it eliminates surface crossings and ensures seamless, safe integration with the high-traffic Mumbai–Vadodara main line.
This strategic elevation is expected to unlock the full potential of the gauge conversion while maintaining uninterrupted train movement on one of India’s busiest corridors.Simultaneously, the Ministry has greenlit the 13.38 km Bhagalpur Bypass in Bihar at a cost of ₹303.20 crore to address severe bottleneck issues in the Eastern Railway zone.
Currently, the Barahat–Bhagalpur section operates at over 125% capacity, forcing time-consuming engine reversals at Bhagalpur Junction for trains traveling toward Sahibganj. The new bypass will connect Gonudham Halt directly to Sabour, effectively decongesting the main junction and significantly improving punctuality and fluid movement for both passenger and freight services.
These dual initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to high-capacity infrastructure and network decongestion to meet the rising demands of India’s transport sector.
