JAMMU, MARCH 21, 2026 — In a significant move to bolster the agricultural landscape of the region, Member of Parliament Sat Sharma and MLA Nagrota, Devyani Rana, visited the two-day Kisan Mela and awareness programme held at the Baba Kailakh Nath Mandir in Thathar.
The dignitaries conducted an extensive tour of the departmental stalls organized by the Department of Horticulture, where they engaged with experts and the local farming community.
Accompanied by Chief Horticulture Officer Jammu, R. Kotwal, and other senior officials, the leaders reviewed the progress of various government initiatives designed to modernize traditional farming.
The event served as a vital platform for disseminating technical knowledge, with the department highlighting transformative schemes such as High-Density Fruit Plantation, the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP), and the JKCIP.
Farmers were briefed on the financial subsidies available for expanding fruit crop areas, rejuvenating unproductive orchards, and establishing state-of-the-art fruit nurseries.
A key focus of the exhibition was post-harvest management, where experts demonstrated advanced techniques in grading, packaging, and value addition to help farmers secure better market prices for their produce.
Both MP Sat Sharma and MLA Devyani Rana lauded the Horticulture Department’s proactive approach in reaching the grassroots level. They emphasized that adopting modern horticultural practices is no longer an option but a necessity to enhance productivity and double farmers’ incomes.
Adding a cultural dimension to the fair, the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) hosted a two-day book exhibition, showcasing a rich collection of journals and publications.
The Mela saw a massive turnout, with local residents showing a keen interest in transitioning toward sustainable and high-yield agricultural models.
