Medium-Level Avalanche Warning Issued for Baramulla and Kupwara: Residents Urged to Stay Alert

SRINAGAR, March 20, 2026 – The Jammu and Kashmir Jammu and Kashmir Department of Disaster Management (JKUTDMA) has issued a critical weather advisory, warning of a Medium Danger Level avalanche likely to occur in the higher reaches of North Kashmir.

According to the latest data, the threat is specifically concentrated at altitudes above 2,600 meters over the districts of Baramulla and Kupwara within the next 24 hours. The alert follows recent snowfall in the region, which has significantly increased the instability of the snowpack on steep slopes.

Authorities have strongly advised residents living in these high-altitude zones to restrict their movement and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas or steep mountain gradients. The JKUTDMA emphasizes that even a medium-level warning indicates a significant risk to life and property in exposed locations.

Local administration and emergency services have been put on standby to respond to any contingencies. People are encouraged to “Stay Alert and Stay Safe” and keep emergency contact numbers handy as the situation is monitored closely over the next 24-hour window.
