Indian Railways to Deploy AI Surveillance and QR-Code Access in Major Digital Security Overhaul

NEW DELHI, March 20, 2026 – Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, chaired a high-level review meeting at Rail Bhawan today, mandating a series of tech-driven reforms aimed at transforming passenger security and station management.

In a move to modernize the travel experience, the Minister directed the time-bound implementation of an AI-powered camera network and a QR code-based access control system, starting with a pilot project at New Delhi Railway Station.

These reforms, designed to tackle the massive footfall expected during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals, focus on high-tech surveillance, streamlined entry, and enhanced accountability for both railway and contractual staff.

Central to this security upgrade is the deployment of a comprehensive AI surveillance grid. These “digital eyes” will provide round-the-clock monitoring of platforms, concourses, and entry-exit points, linked to an Exception Event Display control room that alerts staff to unusual activities in real-time.

To complement this digital shield, the Minister ordered a new color-coded identification system. All railway employees will now wear fluorescent jackets, while non-railway staff—including vendors, porters, and IRCTC personnel—will be assigned distinct colors.

This system, paired with mandatory detailed ID cards, is intended to boost passenger trust and allow security forces to instantly identify authorized personnel within station premises.

Furthermore, the Ministry is focusing on seamless “last-mile” connectivity and crowd regulation. The RailOne App is set to be integrated with Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform, to provide transparent transport options and reduce chaos outside station exits.

To prevent dangerous overcrowding, 76 major stations are currently upgrading “Holding Areas” for unreserved passengers, ensuring phased access to platforms.

By combining these physical infrastructure upgrades with cutting-edge digital tools, the Indian Railways aims to create a regulated, safe, and world-class environment for millions of daily commuters.
