Indian Navy Launches IOS SAGAR Second Edition to Bolster Indian Ocean Maritime Security

NEW DELHI | MARCH 18, 2026 — In a significant move to fortify regional stability, the Indian Navy officially commenced the second edition of the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative on March 16, 2026.

This year’s program sees a robust participation from 16 member nations of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), following India’s assumption of the IONS chair in February 2026.

The initiative is a direct reflection of the Government of India’s strategic vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the broader MAHASAGAR framework, which emphasizes mutual and holistic advancement for security across the maritime domain.

The IOS SAGAR program is uniquely designed as a hands-on operational engagement, allowing naval personnel from friendly foreign nations to train and sail alongside their Indian counterparts.

The current edition began with intensive professional training at Indian Naval establishments in Kochi, focusing on advanced seamanship, naval operations, and contemporary maritime security concepts.

Following this shore-based phase, participants will embark on an Indian Naval Ship for an active sea deployment. This integration aims to enhance interoperability, foster shared understanding of maritime challenges, and build lasting professional linkages through practical cooperation and port visits across the region.
