J&K Launches PM-RAHAT Scheme: Cashless Medical Treatment for Road Accident Victims
JAMMU, MARCH 16, 2026 — In a major move to enhance trauma care and reduce fatalities on the road, the Jammu and Kashmir government has officially rolled out the PM-Road Accident Victims Hospitalization and Assured Treatment (PM-RAHAT) Scheme.
This life-saving initiative is specifically designed to provide immediate, high-quality medical intervention for accident victims during the “Golden Hour”—the critical first hour following an injury when prompt treatment most significantly increases the chances of survival.Under the new guidelines released by the Transport Department, the scheme offers cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh per victim.
This coverage extends across more than 140 designated hospitals and remains valid for up to seven days from the date of the accident. To ensure the program’s success, a multi-departmental task force involving the Transport, Health, and Police departments, along with district administrations, has been mandated to maintain seamless coordination and rapid response times.
Beyond medical coverage, the government is also incentivizing public heroism through the Rah-Veer (Good Samaritan) program. Individuals who assist victims in reaching a hospital will be rewarded with a ₹25,000 grant and a Certificate of Appreciation. For group rescues, the reward will be shared equally among the participants.
Furthermore, the initiative includes a prestigious national-level recognition, where 10 annual awards of ₹1,00,000 will be presented to the most exemplary Rah-Veers.
Authorities have urged the public to act swiftly by reporting accidents to the nearest police station or control room to ensure no victim is left without care.
