Indian Army and Ladakh Communities Launch Massive Cleanliness Drive to Protect Indus River Ecosystem

LEH, LADAKH | March 16, 2026 — In a significant boost to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Indian Army joined forces with the local residents of Rongo and Tia villages to conduct a comprehensive cleanliness drive along the banks of the Indus River.

Recognizing the river as the lifeblood of the high-altitude region, the initiative focused on removing waste and preventing pollution in one of India’s most ecologically sensitive zones.

This collaborative effort underlines a shared commitment to safeguarding the “veins of Ladakh” from environmental degradation.Beyond the physical cleanup, the program featured interactive awareness sessions designed to educate the community on sustainable waste management and the long-term benefits of a cleaner and healthier environment.

By fostering a sense of collective responsibility, the Indian Army and the villagers aim to preserve the pristine beauty of the Ladakhi landscape for future generations.

These community-led interventions are seen as vital steps in maintaining the delicate balance of the Himalayan ecosystem while promoting the national mission of a cleaner India.
