Ladakh LG Vinai Kumar Saxena Orders Creation of 50 New Water Bodies to Combat Water Scarcity

LEH, LADAKH — March 14, 2026 — In a major move to bolster water security across the high-altitude cold desert, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has directed the Ladakh administration to develop a comprehensive plan for at least 50 new water bodies.

During a high-level meeting with Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, the LG issued a 15-day deadline to identify suitable locations and finalize an action plan. This initiative is specifically designed to mitigate the harsh impacts of climate change, such as receding glaciers and depleting water tables, which have increasingly threatened the livelihoods of local inhabitants and the agricultural sector.

The proposed water bodies will serve as a multi-purpose infrastructure solution for the Union Territory. Primarily, they will provide a reliable irrigation source for farmers and support a massive upcoming “mission mode” roadside plantation drive.

By capturing rainwater and snowmelt that would otherwise be lost to runoff, these reservoirs will act as vital conservation hubs.

Furthermore, the LG envisions these sites as community assets; during the winter months, the frozen surfaces will be utilized for winter sports, while the surrounding areas will be developed with public amenities, including eateries and parking spaces, to boost local recreation and tourism.

Emphasizing a holistic and scientific approach, the LG stressed that the design of these water bodies must account for Ladakh’s unique geographical and climatic vulnerabilities. The project aims to integrate sustainable water management with community welfare, ensuring long-term resilience against environmental shifts.

By involving local residents in the consultation process, the UT administration seeks to create a decentralized water network that secures both the fragile ecosystem and the economic future of Ladakh’s people.
