India Coast Guard Rescues Distressed Sri Lankan Fishermen Adrift for Five Days in Palk Bay

MANDAPAM, March 06, 2026 — Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to maritime safety, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully rescued two Sri Lankan fishermen who had been adrift in Palk Bay for nearly a week.

During a surveillance sortie on March 5, 2026, the crew of ICG Air Cushion Vessel H-190 located the fishing vessel in a state of distress. Investigations revealed that the boat had been drifting helplessly since February 28, 2026, following a critical machinery failure.

Upon discovery, the ICG personnel immediately provided the exhausted fishermen with essential food and water. Subsequently, ICG Ship C-431 towed the disabled craft to Mandapam, where both the vessel and its crew were safely handed over to the Coastal Security Group (CSG).

This timely humanitarian intervention highlights the ICG’s vital role in ensuring the protection and safety of all mariners at sea.
