Jammu, February 18, 2026 — In a landmark achievement for the healthcare landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has become the first of the newly established GMCs in the Union Territory to receive official approval for a Superspeciality course in Cardiology.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has formally accredited the institution with three DrNB Cardiology seats, signaling a major leap forward in medical education and tertiary care. This accreditation solidifies GMC Anantnag’s status as a premier hub for advanced cardiac treatment, setting a new benchmark for peripheral medical colleges across the country.

By providing high-quality treatment closer to home, the government aims to enhance patient outcomes and ease the burden on existing tertiary hospitals in major cities. The introduction of this superspeciality program is part of a broader, comprehensive strategy to upgrade Jammu and Kashmir’s medical infrastructure through the recruitment of specialist faculty and the procurement of cutting-edge diagnostic equipment.
Minister Itoo emphasized that GMC Anantnag is now poised to excel in cardiac research and training, offering new avenues for postgraduate medical aspirants. This historic milestone reflects a patient-centric vision aimed at building a robust and accessible healthcare system that meets international standards of excellence.
