JAMMU, Feb 12, 2026 — Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmed Rana, informed the Legislative Assembly today that comprehensive flood management and river training works are being executed annually along the River Tawi. Responding to a query from Legislator Surinder Kumar, the Minister explained that these vital infrastructure projects are funded through UT CAPEX and NABARD, focusing on strengthening embankments and implementing river training measures from Manwal to the Indo-Pak border. Rana confirmed that under the UT CAPEX framework, six protection works have already been completed, while five others are currently in various stages of progress to mitigate flood risks in the region.
The Minister further detailed that three significant new restoration projects, estimated at Rs 769.96 lakh, have recently been moved to the tendering phase. These upcoming works target high-priority areas, including the restoration of earthen embankments on the left bank at Bikram Chowk and upstream of the Bikram Chowk Bridge. Additionally, the plan includes the reconstruction of damaged flood protection structures near Hari Singh Park on the right bank, as well as new safeguards for residential properties and agricultural land at Chak Malhori Bajalta. By prioritizing these approved tenders, the government aims to enhance the structural integrity of the riverbanks and provide long-term security to local communities vulnerable to seasonal flooding.
