J&K Budget Session 2026: Legislative Assembly Passes Motion of Thanks on Lieutenant Governor’s Address
JAMMU, Feb 05, 2026 – The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly today formally adopted the Motion of Thanks on the Lieutenant Governor’s address, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing 2026-27 Budget Session.
The motion, which follows the LG’s address delivered on February 2, was moved by MLA Showkat Hussain Ganie and seconded by MLA Dr. Rameshwar Singh. After an extensive debate involving members from across the political spectrum, the motion was passed via a voice vote, signaling a unified legislative focus on the developmental roadmap laid out for the Union Territory.
The discussion saw active participation from both the treasury and opposition benches. Leader of Opposition, Sunil Kumar Sharma, emphasized the collective responsibility of the House to meet the high expectations of the public, urging sincere efforts toward regional progress.
While several legislators, including Tanvir Sadiq and Mir Saifullah, lauded the government for accelerating developmental activities and the historic restoration of the “Darbar Move,” others raised critical social concerns. Notable issues brought to the floor included the urgent need for land allocation for flood victims, compensation for affected families, and the timely filling of government vacancies to combat rising unemployment among the youth.
A significant portion of the debate focused on economic and administrative reforms. Legislators called for increased funding for the horticulture sector, revised minimum wages for daily wagers, and the rationalization of reservation policies to ensure equitable opportunities for the youth.
Despite several amendments being proposed by members such as Balwant Singh Mankotia and Sajad Gani Lone—which were ultimately defeated through voice vote—and a withdrawn amendment by Muhammad Yousuf Rather (Tarigami) following assurances from the Chief Minister, the session concluded with a general consensus on the necessity of a transparent and result-oriented governance framework for Jammu and Kashmir.
