Udhampur State Taxes Team Foils Tax Evasion Bid; Recover ₹8.96 Lakh Penalty for GST Violations

UDHAMPUR, Feb 05, 2026 – The State Taxes Enforcement Team of Udhampur successfully thwarted a major tax evasion attempt today, intercepting a vehicle transporting mixed scrap in direct violation of the GST framework.

Utilizing advanced data analysis from the e-Way Bill portal and RFID tracking, the team—led by GST Inspector Mohit Jamwal under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Anil Kumar Chandail—recovered a penalty of ₹8,96,128.

Preliminary investigations confirmed serious irregularities in the movement of goods, highlighting a deliberate effort to bypass statutory tax provisions and misuse the current insolvency and tax frameworks.

This successful operation underscores a significant surge in enforcement efficiency; by the end of January 2026, the Udhampur team had realized total penalties of ₹2.55 crore, marking an 11% increase over the previous year.

Additionally, e-Way Bill verifications saw a dramatic 38% rise, reaching ₹4.01 lakh. These performance metrics have earned high praise from Commissioner P. K. Bhat and Additional Commissioner Namrita Dogra, who noted that the department’s “balanced and mature” approach has resulted in a negligible number of legal challenges, proving the technical accuracy and professional focus of the enforcement actions.

The State Taxes Department has issued a stern warning to high-risk sectors, particularly the scrap trade, stating that any attempts to evade tax will meet with heavy penalties and potential prosecution. While the department is intensifying surveillance through intelligence-based enforcement, it also acknowledged the vital role of compliant taxpayers in maintaining a fair trading environment. Taxpayers are encouraged to maintain strict adherence to GST provisions and seek guidance from local tax offices to ensure transparency and avoid severe penal consequences.
