Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary Calls for Restoration of Statehood and Vows to Defeat Cross-Border Terror Designs

SRINAGAR, January 26, 2026 – Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, while addressing the 77th Republic Day gathering at Bakshi Stadium, issued a stern warning against external attempts to destabilize the region, asserting that security forces will crush any “evil designs” orchestrated by Pakistan.

Highlighting the intersection of regional security and political identity, Choudhary reaffirmed the government’s pursuit of statehood, noting that the Prime Minister and Home Minister have already committed to the Parliament and the Supreme Court that Jammu and Kashmir’s state status would be restored soon.

He emphasized that a return to statehood, coupled with a robust security grid, is essential for the long-term stability and democratic aspirations of the people.

Reflecting on the resilience of the Union Territory, the Deputy Chief Minister paid tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack and recalled the hardships faced during Operation Sindoor. He accused Pakistan of deliberately targeting the tourism industry—the backbone of the local economy—to spread fear, but assured that the synergy between the police and paramilitary forces has made the region ready to welcome global travelers once again.

While lauding the success of counter-terrorism operations, Choudhary noted that the mission of the police is evolving; he urged forces to tackle the growing “drug menace” with equal vigor to safeguard the future of the youth.

Enumerating the milestones of the Omar Abdullah-led government over the past 15 months, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted significant developmental and welfare initiatives despite existing financial constraints. He called upon the Central Government to provide ample financial assistance to meet the growing infrastructure needs of the region.

Earlier in the day, after paying homage to martyrs at the Balidan Stambh at Pratap Park, Choudhary told reporters that 2026 is poised to be a landmark year for economic recovery. He concluded by reiterating that the administration remains steadfast in its dual goal of ensuring foolproof security and fulfilling the promise of restored statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
