Jammu Division Canals to Close for Annual Maintenance and Desilting from January 15

JAMMU | January 10, 2026:-The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has announced the temporary closure of all major irrigation canals across the Jammu province starting January 15, 2026, to facilitate essential annual desilting and maintenance operations.

According to official communiqués from the Chief Engineers of the Irrigation & Flood Control and Ravi Tawi Irrigation Departments, the closure will affect key water networks, including the Ranbir Canal, New Partap Canal, Kathua Canal, and the Tawi Lift Irrigation Canal, along with the extensive Ravi Canal system and their respective distribution networks.

This strategic shutdown is necessary to ensure the structural integrity and efficiency of the region’s water supply infrastructure ahead of the next agricultural cycle.

The decision follows formal consent from the Director of Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare, Jammu, ensuring that the maintenance window aligns with the current agricultural requirements. While the canals will be closed mid-month, the authorities have noted that the official date for reopening will be announced separately once the desilting works are completed.

All concerned Superintending and Executive Engineers have received strict instructions to finalize all repairs and cleaning tasks within the stipulated timeframe to prevent any delay in restoring water flow to the division’s farmlands.
