India Primary Guarantor of Peace in Indian Ocean Region as Rajnath Singh Lauds Navy Maritime Security
VISAKHAPATNAM, July 10, 2026 — India stands firmly as the primary guarantor of peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh commended the Indian Navy for its steadfast dedication to safeguarding national maritime interests and upholding the Tricolour within an increasingly complex global security environment. Speaking to naval personnel in Visakhapatnam during a Barakhana event on the eve of the commissioning of Mahendragiri—the sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate—Singh highlighted the critical role of naval vigilance in protecting the country’s economic and strategic assets.
With over 90 percent of India’s trade volume moving through maritime routes, the nation’s energy security, Exclusive Economic Zone, and island territories make robust maritime defense central to its economic growth. Singh noted that intensifying geopolitical competition and the expanding presence of extra-regional powers necessitate heightened vigilance. Describing the Indian Ocean Region as the nation’s “courtyard,” he reaffirmed India’s responsibility as the largest and most accountable stakeholder committed to maintaining a secure, stable, and peaceful maritime environment.
Looking toward the future of defense, the upcoming commissioning of Mahendragiri showcases India’s accelerating stride toward indigenous manufacturing and self-reliance. While praising the valor and patriotism of the armed forces, Singh warned that the character of modern warfare is changing rapidly, with future conflicts likely to emerge in unforeseen, undeclared forms. He urged soldiers to continuously upgrade their skills and master cutting-edge technologies. Reaffirming state support, Singh emphasized that the government remains fully committed to equipping defense forces with world-class weaponry and resources, noting that while technology is vital, it is ultimately the personnel wielding these tools who secure victory. The event was attended by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, and other senior naval officials.
