Interpol Red Corner Notice issued against Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo
SRINAGAR, July 11, 2026 — The State Investigation Agency Kashmir secured an Interpol Red Corner Notice against designated Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo, also known as Fayaz or Sajad, for his involvement in the 2013 Tarzoo terrorist attack. The issuance of the notice follows a comprehensive investigation by the agency and will enable international law enforcement bodies to locate, detain, and initiate extradition proceedings against the accused.
The case involves a terrorist ambush on April 26, 2013, at Peer Mohalla in Hygam, Sopore, where armed terrorists killed four Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel. The investigation was transferred to the agency in 2024, leading to a detailed chargesheet filed against six accused individuals.Among the other five accused in the case, Tariq Ahmad Mir and Qayoom Najar were previously killed in encounters with security forces, while Javid Ahmad Mattoo, Rouf Najar, and Ahmadullah Malla have been arrested and are currently facing trial.
The main accused, Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo, remains at large and is believed to have fled to Pakistan. An active commander of the banned Hizbul Mujahideen outfit since 2010, Kandoo was declared a Designated Individual Terrorist by the Government of India in October 2022.
Beyond the 2013 ambush, he is wanted in at least ten other terror-related cases involving targeted killings, weapons smuggling, and narco-terror financing. The agency reiterated its commitment to using international legal mechanisms to dismantle terrorist networks and ensure fugitives face trial.
