Landmark BNS Conviction: Public Intoxication Offender Sentenced to Community Service in Jammu

Jammu January 01, 2026:- In a significant legal development under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Jammu Police at Police Post Jourian have secured a reformative conviction against an individual for public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

The accused, identified as Baljinder Singh, son of Balkar Singh and a resident of Jadh, Tehsil Jourian, was apprehended on December 30, 2025, after being found in an inebriated state and causing a nuisance in a public area. Following a medical examination and immediate arrest, the individual was produced before the Hon’ble Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC) Akhnoor.

Adopting the modern, corrective spirit of the new criminal laws, the Hon’ble Court passed a landmark order on December 31, 2025, under Section 355 of the BNS. Rather than traditional incarceration for a minor offense, the court sentenced Singh to 07 days of compulsory community service.

The offender is required to perform this service at the Court Complex in Akhnoor from January 01 to January 07, 2026. This ruling highlights a shift toward reformative justice in Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to sensitize offenders about public responsibility while maintaining law and order.
