Statehood is Non-Negotiable’: Omar Abdullah Vows to Hold July 20 Delhi Protest

SRINAGAR, July 15, 2024: Signaling a resolute stance on the region’s political future, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed that the National Conference (NC) will strictly adhere to its schedule for a massive demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20 to demand the immediate restoration of statehood.

The announcement comes during a period of profound grief for both the Abdullah family and the National Conference following the severe health deterioration and passing of veteran leader Mustafa Kamal. Abdullah emphasized that the protest represents a non-negotiable mission for the political identity of the Union Territory, asserting that altering the timeline would go against the lifelong wishes of Kamal himself, a prominent multi-term former MLA who dedicated his career to touching the lives of countless citizens across the region.

Demonstrating the party’s strict discipline in prioritizing state issues over personal bereavement, the Chief Minister recalled that even when medical professionals warned on July 11 that Kamal was unlikely to survive the day, party President Farooq Abdullah gave strict instructions to proceed with a vital Jammu program scheduled for July 12.

Maintaining that same standard of political urgency, Omar Abdullah stated that NC leadership will arrive in the national capital on July 19. Acknowledging potential administrative hurdles, he clarified that even if Delhi authorities deny formal permission to assemble at Jantar Mantar, the delegation will hold immediate on-site consultations to determine their next course of action, underscoring that the party possesses the necessary patience and strategic resolve to navigate any institutional pushback.
