RBI ₹2000 Note Withdrawal Status: Over 98% of Currency Returned as Remaining Notes Continue to be Legal Tender
MUMBAI, JULY 10, 2026: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has provided a status update on the withdrawal of ₹2000 denomination banknotes, revealing that a staggering 98.47% of the notes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have been successfully returned.
According to official data from the central bank, the total value of these high-value notes in circulation has plummeted from ₹3.56 lakh crore at the start of the withdrawal process down to just ₹5,451 crore by the close of business on April 30, 2026. Despite the significant volume of currency pulled from active circulation, the RBI explicitly reiterated that the ₹2000 banknotes continue to retain their status as legal tender.
While the initial convenience of depositing or exchanging the ₹2000 banknotes at standard commercial bank branches nationwide concluded on October 07, 2023, alternative channels remain fully active for individuals holding the currency. The exchange facility continues to be available at 19 designated RBI Issue Offices across the country.
Additionally, these RBI Issue Offices accept the banknotes from individuals and entities for direct deposit into their respective bank accounts. For those unable to visit an office in person, members of the public can securely send the ₹2000 notes through any India Post office nationwide to have the amount credited directly to their bank accounts.
