Legal Action Initiated in Chenani: Ramban Resident Booked for Spreading False Information Online

CHENANI, July 28 — In a stern push against fake news and digital miscreants, the Chenani Police has formally registered an FIR against a resident of Ramban district for allegedly fabricating and circulating false information across social media networks.

The accused has been identified as Sunil Kumar, son of Suram Chand, residing in the Chander Kot area of Ramban district.

According to official reports from Police Station Chenani, the action was taken after police identified online posts containing unverified and misleading claims capable of misinforming the public and creating societal discord.

Following preliminary verification, police registered FIR No. 144/2026 under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 353(2) specifically deals with the publishing, circulating, or making of statements or reports containing false information, rumors, or alarming news intended to provoke public mischief or incite illegal acts.

Senior police officials confirmed that a detailed investigation into the matter is underway to trace the origins of the content and assess the scope of its dissemination. Further legal consequences, including potential arrests or proceedings in court, will follow based on the outcome of the investigation.

In light of the incident, the Chenani Police issued a public advisory cautioning citizens against sharing unverified posts, sensational rumors, or misleading graphics on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram. Authorities emphasized that ignorance of the law will not be considered an excuse and warned that individuals indulging in such digital malpractice will face immediate legal action under relevant penal laws.
