Ladakh LG Vinai Kumar Saxena Orders High-Tech Landslide Mitigation Measures Along Key Highways

LEH, AUGUST 07, 2026 — Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena chaired a high-level review meeting with the Indian Army, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and the Union Territory Administration to address disaster preparedness and execute immediate preventive measures. The meeting was convened following a series of frequent landslides and severe rockfalls across Ladakh, which have inflicted widespread damage on local villages and severely disrupted traffic movement along key regional highways.

To prevent further destruction and secure major transit corridors, Vinai Kumar Saxena directed participating agencies to execute immediate safety audits across identified high-risk stretches, particularly along the Leh-Kargil National Highway and the high-altitude Khardung La pass. He stressed the deployment of advanced engineering solutions, including rock bolting, flexible ring nets, soil nailing, and real-time smart detection systems, to actively mitigate landslide occurrences and protect vulnerable terrain.

While commending the armed forces, relief personnel, and road maintenance crews for their prompt rescue operations and swift clearance efforts during recent crises, Vinai Kumar Saxena urged all administrative and defense agencies to undergo a structural shift in their approach. He emphasized the necessity of transitioning from a “reactive response” strategy toward robust “proactive safety and preventive measures” to mitigate risks before disasters strike.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to regional stability, the Lieutenant Governor reiterated that safeguarding human lives, protecting essential infrastructure, and guaranteeing uninterrupted, safe connectivity for both local residents and visiting tourists remain the primary priorities across the Union Territory of Ladakh.
