Indian Navy ship INS Kolkata thwarts piracy attempt on merchant vessel in Indian Ocean

NEW DELHI, May 27, 2026 — Indian Navy warship INS Kolkata successfully intercepted and foiled a piracy attempt targeting a merchant vessel in the Western Indian Ocean.

Responding swiftly to intelligence inputs regarding active pirate activity near the vessel, MV Mashallah 1, the naval ship deployed immediate measures to investigate the situation and deter the potential threat.

The timely intervention by the crew of INS Kolkata ensured the complete safety of the merchant vessel and effectively prevented a hijacking attempt.
