Ladakh administration approves 17 new tehsils to boost grassroots governance
LEH — JULY 12, 2026: In a major policy decision aimed at reorganizing the revenue administrative framework in the Union Territory of Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the creation of 17 new tehsils.
This strategic expansion is designed to strengthen grassroots governance and bring public administration closer to the local population, effectively raising the total number of tehsils in the region from 15 to 32. The newly implemented rationalization ensures a clean administrative division, mapping every single revenue village to a unique tehsil and every tehsil to an individual district, which successfully eliminates the jurisdictional overlaps that previously complicated local administration.
Under this updated structural blueprint, Leh District will consist of 5 tehsils, Kargil 7, Changthang 4, Nubra 6, Zanskar 4, Sham 5, and Drass 1 tehsil. This comprehensive restructuring aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a highly developed and prosperous Ladakh, an objective central to the region’s establishment as a Union Territory in 2019.
Ultimately, the robust administrative framework is set to enhance public service delivery, accelerate the execution of key developmental initiatives, and ensure that citizens residing in the most remote border areas enjoy seamless and efficient access to essential government services.
